Draft for double page spread interview

We welcome Jessica Williams to Rhythm & Blues magazine. Today we finally find out the gossip on her and her career, over the past 2 weeks she has climbed the charts and finally reached number one in the official charts. I met up with her at Warner Brother Studios filming a part of his new music video for All day long. Her hit single lifestyle has touched the hearts of all young girls and boys bringing old fashioned R&B back to the top appealing to all audiences.

Me “So how do you feel Jessica, after all your hard work you have finally reached the top spot”

J: “ well firstly I would just like to thank you for having me it’s great to be here, and it feels good to be number one; all those long nights paid off and it feels good, an obviously it would not be possible without all my amazing fans.”

M “well thank you (laughs), well your music has touched the hearts of us all, it’s good to hear some good old fashioned R&B again, but what I think our readers would most like to know is when is the album coming out?”

J: “ Well I really love Pharrel Williams especially his new song happy, it makes me dance and I even do the clap (laughs), but he inspired me to write and sing, and well we are working on the album still we have one song left to do with a surprise guest appearing, its been hard to keep it a secret but the release date is 0/00/0000”

M “ooo sounds exciting any hints on who it is?”

J “ I’m afraid it has to be a secret but I can tell you that they are very well known”

M “ well thank you for your time and I can’t wait to buy your new album and im sure our readers are most excited to buy it as well”

Creating the costumes

For my costume I wanted to achieve a current and R and B vibe. This outfit is the perfect combination of hip and stylish, linking well to my audience and appealing to what they would expect. From my research I saw that this was the best look that would create the perfect outfit for my audience.

For this outfit I have kept it simple by using simple colours, when using this imaage for my contents page the simple colours complemeted the bold purple well and this then helped make the page and image stand out.

For the final outfit my aim was to create an urban look, I have achieved this by using wooden bagles and the dark black sunglasses (as well as the other elements to the outfit)

Change of idea

From my initial idea of the title of my magazine and my colour scheme I have felt that my original idea did not suit my genre therefore I have changed the name from 'Rhythm and Blues' to 'Bounce'. I feel this better suites my genre as it is more appropriate to modern R and B, I have also slightly altered my colour scheme and changed burgundy to black along with white and purple I feel this better suits my overall idea for my magazine, this has been represented in my drafts and final ideas for my magazine.

Analysis of R and B magazines

R and B magazines always has a continuous theme throughout, they all have one main artist featured, there are no other images featured on the front cover just the artist featured. By doing this it has created a sense of importance for the main artist, by keeping it simple the magazine has been able to draw attention purely through the use of the featured artist. The colour scheme is simple, using colours that are simple helps make the bolder colours stand out. For example Billboard magazine highlights its simple black title by 'colouring in' the centre of the letters. This then becomes iconic to the brand and memorable by the reader and if ever seeing these colours in the same sequence will then unconsciously remind the reader that it is Billboard magazine. Red is a consistent colour throughout R and B magazines whether worn apart of an artists look  or used as text. In the Florence Welch article her red hair and lips is complemented by the red and white striped material. This is  then highlighted by the soft grey and black and emphasising the red and therefore the artist featured. The positioning of text and images vary between magazine and the type of article, however the main image on the front cover is consistent throughout the different magazines. The artist is always centred and is normally a half body shot, the position of the artist within the photograph varies but despite this it is always placed in the centre of the cover. Font styles differentiates throughout the magazines, they also change size and style depending on the purpose. For example on the Adele features magazine they use a bold and large sized font for the title as well as the first letter of the first word. The main story is always size 11/11.5 and the by line is also a little smaller than the main text.

Readers Profile

Audiences for R&B magazines have 46% male and 54% female and most readers are aged between 15-21. R&B is not age or gender specific and is open to a wide range of audiences, this is what my magazine audience will be and will use colours that appeal to both make and female. However I would prefer for my magazine to be aimed at 15- 30 year olds as I wouldn't want anyone younger that 12 to read my magazine as R&B can have some explicit material.

R and B mood board

My music magazine research

R'n'B is a well known and popular genre of music. It is also a globalised genre with artist such as Beyonce, Rita Ora and Adele. All three of these artist are well known within this genre and are well known globally thus helping make this genre wider and more popular. The typical mise en scene elements consist of simple colours such as black, white and grey. This helps to exaggerate the main image which is normally a famous artist of the specific genre, for example Billboard magazine have made the image of Beyonce  knowles in black and white, this contrasts with the bright colours highlighted in the name of the magazine. Typically most music magazines have a popular or an  up coming artist featured on the front cover with either a quote from the artist or information on them, they also have a  feature story on the front cover that will be in the magazine. They also have a barcode, issue number, date, title, byline, information which will be featured in the magazine (such as prizes and popular stories) and pictures. R 'n' B is not specific to any gender as it is aimed at both male and female, and is usually made clear on the front cover, so that the buyer is sure that the magazine is for him/her. The colours that they usually use are dark colours, such as: Dark Purple, Black and Dark Blue, white and grey. This explains to the reader that the R&B genre of magazines are not gender-biased, as they are presented with dull colours, which in some ways would appeal to both genders as it is a mix of colours for both. The style of font is normally simple and clear this is so all readers will be able to see it and so it will stand out more on a shelf of magazines. For example in ELLE magazine there font is simple and you can still recognise the brand even if a part of the title is covered by the main image.

Music magazines in a shop analysis

Magazine stands are an important part of advertising and can attract passers by. The layout of the stand can also be very important to each genre of magazine as the shelf position can provide more advertising. The majority of magazines on this stand are fashion and TV. The music magazines are placed on the bottom of the shelf, this can make it difficult to see them and as they are surrounded by lots of other magazines this can make it see packed and messy. Each magazine has their own individual colour scheme which makes it appeal to their certain type of audience, for example a fashion magazine will have a simple but effective colour scheme. The layout for magazines is also very important as the front cover will be the first thing the audience sees therefore needing to stand out from the other magazines on display. Recently with the advancement of technology magazine sales have decreased and internet viewings have increased. This has affected sales and a lot of old style magazines have had to be discontinued. However this could be beneficial to collectors as it would increase there value. The costumes for each person presented on the front cover of a magazine is also an important aspect as they also need to be relevant to the specific type of magazine. Fashion magazines need to have the most recent and up to date clothing and football magazines need to have the winning teams football kit.

Audience research

Each genre of music magazines have a different type of audience, this depends on the type of music, style, layout, colours, artist they use etc.

POP

Pop is one of the most common and popular types of music, their main type of audience is young girls ranging from 13-17 however it does appeal to some young boys. When doing research I  discovered that out of 10 girls aged 16-17 8/10 girls said the prefer POP music to any other genre, the other two said that the varied between genres. When asking 10 boys aged 16-17 only 2 out of 10 boys asked said they liked POP.

Rock

Rock is seen as a genre with a mixed aged audience. There are many different sub genes of rock such as indie, and each sub genre has their own specific audience. What is stereotypically known as pure rock has an older generation as its audience because it was a specific genre when they was growing up in the 60's and the 70's however now their are more sub genres now giving it a broader audience.

Classical

The main audience for classical music is aged between 50-70 years old for both genders. Classical has a very specific type of audience and was known to be listened to be mainly upper class people during the victorian period.

Reggae

Reggae was pioneered through the 60's and 70's, their primary audience was poor working class Jamaicans, however this spread across the globe being listened to by all ages, race and gender. Reggae was used as a branch for many sub-genres such as hip-hop and ska. One of the most popular artist from reggae was Bob Marley. His music appealed to all types of people from young to old.

Country

39% of country music listeners are apart of the top demographics, Each week, more than 45,487,700 adults listen to Country radio stations nationwide. There is no specific age for a country music listener, country music has a wide audience with artist such as Taylor Swift.

R'n'B

Most of R'n'B's songs are based on love this therefore will appeal to an audience of 16 years old to 32 years old, this is because they would have been more likely to experience love and then would be able to relate to it. They have a mixed gender audience as this genre is not specific to one gender.

Magazine comparison of two music magazines

Institutions

Top of the Pops magazine is published by the BBC which is a well know conglomerate company in the UK as well as being known world wide. Top of the Pops is published monthly, this is a supplementary magazine for the music TV show Top of the Pops  which was cancelled later in 2006, however it is still aired for christmas specials.
Jazz Times is an American magazine devoted to jazz. Published 10 times a year, it was founded in 1970 by Ira Davidson Sabin as a newsletter called Radio Free Jazz.
Target audience

Top of the Pops main target audience is young teenage girls aged 11-15. 87% of the readership is girls and the other 13% is young boy. It cost £2.30 and can be seen as quite expensive for this audience demographic however it is made up by the fact that they give away free gifts such as nail polish and posters.
Jazz Times target audience is aimed at an older american audience, this is because jazz originated from African-American communities therefore having grown up with it and liking the magazine.

Style and representation

Top of the Pops target audience is young girls and its style therefore needs to be fun and girly. This is represented through the glittery title and the main image of a well known pop icon, Jessie J. This attracts their target audience as this is what is known to link to this demographic.

Double page spread analysis 2

This is a double page spread for 'Q' magazine. The left side of the magazine features Lady Gaga wearing a very revealing outfit. This would appeal to audience members that find her attractive and therefore increasing sales of Q magazine. Her body language and lack of clothing create a raw image and as the photograph takes up half a page this shows her significance to the article and informs the audience that it is most likely about her. As the photo has been edited from colour to grey scale, this then follows the colour scheme of the magazine and also helps make the bold red 'L' stand out to the right of the page.

Double page spread analysis 1

This double page spread is an interview with a member from AFI; Davey Havok. The layout is simple with a bold title and the word 'absolutely' bold and enlarged with an exclamation mark. This shows us that it is an enthusiastic comment from Davey and is also his answer to the interviewers question. This can make the reader more excited about the interview because the artist featured in it is excited. The main piece of text is on the right hand side and the main image is on the left. The interviewers question is highlighted in white making it clearer for the reader to see the questions asked. In the top left corner is a black box with 'NEWS' in capitals. This is a bold statement alerting the readers about the articles importance. Davey's facial expression and body language is a cool edgy look that may be seen as attractive to certain members of the audience. His hair also ties into his look. The spots of bright lighting gives a star look to the artist featured in the magazine.

Contents page analysis 4

The content page for smash hits is very busy. The title is in bold to draw the eye as the page is overloaded with information . There is no main image however their are four separate ones all of Lady Gaga, this implies that the magazine is focused on her. Each picture also contains the page numbers from which the pictures came from. The position of the pictures are distorted giving a more edgy fun vibe to the audience. This also links with Lady Gaga and her personality and fashion, both of these parts of Lady Gaga are seen to be edgy and fun. Below the pictures is the list of what is featured in the magazine along with the page numbers, the font is bold with red numbers this ties in with the theme of the magazine. The bold font also makes it easier to read in the magazine. To the left of the title there is a  thought bubble with the words 'welcome back' in it. This implies that the magazine could have been on a break making this issue more exciting to the audience. As it is next to another addition of the magazine this could represent it as if it was from the magazine itself. As it is red it stands out from the rest of the magazine. To the left there is a list of smash hits specials. This makes it more appealing to the audience as they are highly recommended, this could also help spread the magazine by word and mouth.

Contents page analysis 3

Top of the Pops magazine is a bright and bubbly one, this is reflected through the colour scheme and the layout. The originality of this magazine is shown through the fact that the picture of the front cover is placed on the contents page. This can remind the audience of what the main stories are but this time with the page numbers making it easier to find the main stories that are presented on the front page. The layout is separated into sections on which they feature, for example their is a section called 'We love boys'. This makes it easier for the audience to find what they are looking for if they just want to look at something in particular. The section 'We love boys' is an aim at their target audience, young teenage girls. The magazine has also highlighted sections, this could be a representation of what the they believe could be important/interesting things that their audience would like to read about. This contents page also has many interesting features such as 3D posters and a chance to win prizes and offers. This links with the picture of the popular boy band One Direction, the audience might be interested (especially as the main target audience is young teenage girls) as they might have the chance to win tickets to a concert. This could have been done as One Direction are a very popular pop boy band with a large fan base and fans would want the chance to know more about them.

Content page analysis 2

The word 'Contents' is written over three lines creating a fragmented style, giving a cool slick look.  The writing is also in a bold black making it stand out from the simple grey background. The capital 'V' in the background is also consistent throughout Vibe magazines, this gives a sense of continuity throughout Vibe. It also gives it a brand even though it is only the contents page.  The variety of different fonts gives a presented as well as formal look to the magazine making it more interesting and exciting. The  calligraphic style writing for 'features' and 'fashion' tells us that it is one of the main aspects of the contents page. It also gives a classy edge to the magazine, this ties in with the rest of the magazines style. The page numbers are in bold to help readers  see it clearer so they can find the pages they are looking for with less difficulty. As the background is plain this draws attention to the foreground, this being Kanye West. As Vibe is not just a music magazine they need to make sure that each person is dressed fashionable. Kanye West is presented in a smart and stylish way this reflects the confident style of Vibe magazine. As the colour scheme is greyscale this makes the only colour on the page stand out more; this being the heart placed over Kanye's heart. This can make West fans more interested as this could link to Kanye's feelings as the colour red can also connote love. This can tell the audience that the story can be about his personal love life. As the layout is simple it makes it easier for the reader to see the clear and persist information, as it is only a contents page it needs to be clear so the reader knows what to be expected in the rest of the magazine.

Content page analysis 1

'Q' contents page has a simple yet stylish look that is consist throughout the magazine. The dark background with the red features makes the red stand out more and connotes danger, this can make the audience more interested to find out what this 'danger' element is. The bold Q in the corner catches the audiences eye, there is evidence of continuity as the 'Q' logo is illustrated in the front cover as well as throughout the magazine. The layout is simple and not too packed as you would find in a fashion magazine. This can make it easier to read as there is not too much text. The ruff looking artist 'Mick Jagger' gives the magazine an edgy look appealing to an older generation interested in the rock genre. It also contains the date and issue number making the audience aware  they are buying the copy they want. To the right of the main image ( Mick Jagger) is a red box containing the features of the magazine, it also has a section of the 100 greatest albums ever. This makes  it more interesting as the audience can know if they have any of these albums, it can also boost sales of these particular albums as the reader might be interested in the album as it is classed as one of the greatest albums ever. At the bottom of the page it has an arrow pointing to the next page with a title of a main story and it also has the page number for reference.

Music magazine analysis 3

Q magazines simple colour scheme makes a bold yet elegant style, the bold red and simple bold font gives a statement making it attractive to the audience. The main image of international star Adele looks flush as well as her blowing in the wind links to the main stories sub title 'Adele blows us away'. This give the magazine an overall slick feeling. The fonts variation in size for the sub stories points out famous people/artists making the readers more interested to read about people they like. The conventions are: the title, main story, sub stories, barcode, date and issue number. The issue number is bold and encased in a gold circle pointing out its importance as it is the 300th issue, it also features a special musician Paul McCartney that is introduced by Q's 300th edition. The layout is very simple but effective as you can see each section of it clearly as well as having important parts of it in capitals to alert the reader of the important parts of the magazine.

Music magazine analysis 2

The first thing we notice about this music magazine is the colour scheme. The bright pinks and purples instantly tell us that it is aimed and young teenage girls, this is also shown through the artist that are featured in the magazine like One Direction and Cher Lloyd. These artist are all in the pop genre therefore linking to the title 'Top of the Pops' which tells us that his magazine is based on the pop genre. The bold pink title stands out and attracts the audience, the colour pink also connotes fun and girly which links to the audience and what is seen to represent young teenage girls. The main image of the pop star Cher Lloyd is placed in the centre of the image illustrating her importance and that she is the main story. Each side story also contains popular pop artist like One direction and JLS. Each of the side stories are placed playfully down the left side of the main image filling the magazine spaces making it look full and interesting. The font is either bold or slim, due to the two different variations of font this makes the magazine seem more interesting it also tells us what stories are more important than others. This magazine also gives away freebies such as posters of a well loved boy band, this will attract young girls as they would want to collect the posters. The magazine contains all the traditional codes and conventions; Title, barcode, main story, side stories, main image, side images and a logo. However the issue date and issue number is either not on it or clearly shown.

Music magazine analysis 1

The bold red title draws the eye and makes a short powerful statement as it is only three letters. This can make the title memorable as it is not confusing or hard to pronounce/spell. The top of the magazine contains a bar of well known artist that are featured in the magazine. This makes the magazine more attractive as the audience might be more incline to buy it as it contains various popular artist that they would like. The various side stories contain bright blue titles telling us that they are important and interesting stories, however with the variation of different font styles it can make it look untidy if over done however if it is done correctly it can come across as exciting and draw the reader to the magazine.
The main image is of an up and coming boy band with the caption 'Why Britain's gone silly for the lords of indie dancefloor'. The bold title used for the band tells us that it is the main story of the magazine, this is also backed up by the band members making up the main image. The magazine contains the traditional conventions used to create a music magazine. The barcode, title, main stories, main image and back up images. They layout is almost cluttered however this is effective as it follows the main genres that NME focuses on; rock and alternative rock. Despite this they also do feature other genres such as indie. The bottom right contains a yellow box with ' In the Park' in it, this is a music festival and therefore containing artist. If some of the audience is attending this they would want to know who is performing and as this magazine provides this it will make it more attractive to the reader making them want to buy it.

School magazine cover

For my magazine I have used a simple font with a slight swirl to it. This gives a classy and almost 'posh' look to the magazine. However it is not very bold therefore might not be clear enough for the audience to see as the colour of the font is suppose to be burgundy but this is not very clear and the audience might not think it goes along with the colour scheme. My main image is a member of the senior leader ship team (Miss Gould) but I have not mentioned this on my cover therefore this can confuse the audience as they might just think she is just a normal teacher. I have placed Miss Gould in front of this school, this is effective as it gives the audience a feel of the school. I have also included the school logo in the top right corner as a convention of the magazine. In the top left corner I have included the date of the magazine and the issue number, this is so the audience can always be aware of the latest issues. The first story to the left is about GCSE results and the title of it is a rhetorical question. This is effective as it can make the audience question and wonder on the answer making them want to pick it up and find out more. I have presented this story with pictures to make the cove more interesting and attractive. To the right is the second feature story, this is about the year 11 prom and is also presented with a picture from it containing the head of the year ( Mr Curnier) and four students. Beneath this story is a star containing information about a competition with a chance to win a £30 shopping voucher. Readers will be interested especially female students as it is also to a shop of there choice. I have also included logos for social sites and phone types implying an online edition of this magazine.

School magazine planning

The title of my magazine will be The EEHS News. I have named it this as it can tell the audience that it will provide them news of what is going on at EEHS.

The stories will include:

  • Prom pictures and inns and outs of the big event
  • GCSE results
  •  competitions
  •
My colour scheme will consist of burgundy, black and white. I have done this to try and keep the colours neutral and unbiased so it appeals to both male and female.

School magazine analysis 3

The bold red of 'All Sports' magazine attracts the eye and makes it seem interesting, it can also connote danger of the sport. The magazine also gives a chance to win competitions The red circle is like an alert to the readers drawing their eyes to it to tell them about the chance to win a new kit for there team. Competitions are an important part to magazines as readers can feel involved and can also bring excitement as they might have a chance to win something from the magazine.    The natural background of the outdoors gives a happy feel to the magazine and also links to sport as most sports are done outside. The main image of the two team captains is happy a smiley which can encourage the main point of the magazine; sports and to promote excise. This is linked with the question beneath them, this tells us that the are mainly promoting rugby or netball. As it is a question this implies a competition between the two sports and competitive people would become interested because of this. There is not much on this cover and the two stories that are on this cover are very close together, this makes it difficult for the reader to tell the difference between them. As the bottom one has '10' in it and in bold this alerts the reader to how many fixture results there are in the magazine, this makes it clearer to the reader on how many results are featured. This school magazine does not contain some important aspects that it should like the date and issue number, therefore can be confusing to the audience as they might not know which one is the latest issue.

school magazine analysis 2

The Chosen hill magazine is based on the head boy and the aspects of the school. The title has the 'o' and the dot of the 'I' has been coloured in giving it a techno look and also adding a splash of colour to the white font. This makes it seem more interesting as the bold colours would catch the eye of the audience when on the shelf. The main image is of the head boy with stories surrounding him about him and what it is like to be the head boy.   He is positioned on a sideward pose making it seem 'cool' to be the head boy. However he is not showing a good impression of the school with his scruffy uniform. The variation of fonts and the 'Head Boy' in bold tells us that it is an important and interesting story. The feature stories are very small making it difficult to read and this could effect that audience as they might not be able to read it. The typical conventions are:

  • The main image of who features in the main stories
  • The bold font for the title
  • Main stories
Despite all the good things about this magazine it doesn't have all the typical features that a magazine should have, such as:

  • Date of issue
  • supporting images of smaller stories
  • barcode

School magazine analysis 1

The title of this magazine is a representation of how often it is produced 'weekly'. They could have done this to make it clearer and memorable when the magazine is released every week. This also links with the colour red as it is bold and makes a statement. The main image is what looks like a student attending this school, however from the front cover you don't know what school.  She is carrying school supplies and looking enthusiastic. This makes the magazine look more attractive. The bright colours attract a young audience as they are the colours that are related to their niche market, I know this because of seeing other examples. The red and blue is seen to be gender specific appealing to both make and female. The simple font gives a smart school feel, typically there is a variation in fonts to make different stories stand out therefore making it disadvantaged. The main stories and pictures are bold making them attractive on a shelf.
