We welcome Jessica Williams to Rhythm & Blues magazine. Today we finally find out the gossip on her and her career, over the past 2 weeks she has climbed the charts and finally reached number one in the official charts. I met up with her at Warner Brother Studios filming a part of his new music video for All day long. Her hit single lifestyle has touched the hearts of all young girls and boys bringing old fashioned R&B back to the top appealing to all audiences.

Me “So how do you feel Jessica, after all your hard work you have finally reached the top spot”

J: “ well firstly I would just like to thank you for having me it’s great to be here, and it feels good to be number one; all those long nights paid off and it feels good, an obviously it would not be possible without all my amazing fans.”

M “well thank you (laughs), well your music has touched the hearts of us all, it’s good to hear some good old fashioned R&B again, but what I think our readers would most like to know is when is the album coming out?”

J: “ Well I really love Pharrel Williams especially his new song happy, it makes me dance and I even do the clap (laughs), but he inspired me to write and sing, and well we are working on the album still we have one song left to do with a surprise guest appearing, its been hard to keep it a secret but the release date is 0/00/0000”

M “ooo sounds exciting any hints on who it is?”

J “ I’m afraid it has to be a secret but I can tell you that they are very well known”

M “ well thank you for your time and I can’t wait to buy your new album and im sure our readers are most excited to buy it as well”

Creating the costumes

For my costume I wanted to achieve a current and R and B vibe. This outfit is the perfect combination of hip and stylish, linking well to my audience and appealing to what they would expect. From my research I saw that this was the best look that would create the perfect outfit for my audience.

For this outfit I have kept it simple by using simple colours, when using this imaage for my contents page the simple colours complemeted the bold purple well and this then helped make the page and image stand out.

For the final outfit my aim was to create an urban look, I have achieved this by using wooden bagles and the dark black sunglasses (as well as the other elements to the outfit)

Change of idea

From my initial idea of the title of my magazine and my colour scheme I have felt that my original idea did not suit my genre therefore I have changed the name from 'Rhythm and Blues' to 'Bounce'. I feel this better suites my genre as it is more appropriate to modern R and B, I have also slightly altered my colour scheme and changed burgundy to black along with white and purple I feel this better suits my overall idea for my magazine, this has been represented in my drafts and final ideas for my magazine.

Analysis of R and B magazines

R and B magazines always has a continuous theme throughout, they all have one main artist featured, there are no other images featured on the front cover just the artist featured. By doing this it has created a sense of importance for the main artist, by keeping it simple the magazine has been able to draw attention purely through the use of the featured artist. The colour scheme is simple, using colours that are simple helps make the bolder colours stand out. For example Billboard magazine highlights its simple black title by 'colouring in' the centre of the letters. This then becomes iconic to the brand and memorable by the reader and if ever seeing these colours in the same sequence will then unconsciously remind the reader that it is Billboard magazine. Red is a consistent colour throughout R and B magazines whether worn apart of an artists look  or used as text. In the Florence Welch article her red hair and lips is complemented by the red and white striped material. This is  then highlighted by the soft grey and black and emphasising the red and therefore the artist featured. The positioning of text and images vary between magazine and the type of article, however the main image on the front cover is consistent throughout the different magazines. The artist is always centred and is normally a half body shot, the position of the artist within the photograph varies but despite this it is always placed in the centre of the cover. Font styles differentiates throughout the magazines, they also change size and style depending on the purpose. For example on the Adele features magazine they use a bold and large sized font for the title as well as the first letter of the first word. The main story is always size 11/11.5 and the by line is also a little smaller than the main text.

Readers Profile

Audiences for R&B magazines have 46% male and 54% female and most readers are aged between 15-21. R&B is not age or gender specific and is open to a wide range of audiences, this is what my magazine audience will be and will use colours that appeal to both make and female. However I would prefer for my magazine to be aimed at 15- 30 year olds as I wouldn't want anyone younger that 12 to read my magazine as R&B can have some explicit material.

My music magazine research

R'n'B is a well known and popular genre of music. It is also a globalised genre with artist such as Beyonce, Rita Ora and Adele. All three of these artist are well known within this genre and are well known globally thus helping make this genre wider and more popular. The typical mise en scene elements consist of simple colours such as black, white and grey. This helps to exaggerate the main image which is normally a famous artist of the specific genre, for example Billboard magazine have made the image of Beyonce  knowles in black and white, this contrasts with the bright colours highlighted in the name of the magazine. Typically most music magazines have a popular or an  up coming artist featured on the front cover with either a quote from the artist or information on them, they also have a  feature story on the front cover that will be in the magazine. They also have a barcode, issue number, date, title, byline, information which will be featured in the magazine (such as prizes and popular stories) and pictures. R 'n' B is not specific to any gender as it is aimed at both male and female, and is usually made clear on the front cover, so that the buyer is sure that the magazine is for him/her. The colours that they usually use are dark colours, such as: Dark Purple, Black and Dark Blue, white and grey. This explains to the reader that the R&B genre of magazines are not gender-biased, as they are presented with dull colours, which in some ways would appeal to both genders as it is a mix of colours for both. The style of font is normally simple and clear this is so all readers will be able to see it and so it will stand out more on a shelf of magazines. For example in ELLE magazine there font is simple and you can still recognise the brand even if a part of the title is covered by the main image.

Music magazines in a shop analysis

Magazine stands are an important part of advertising and can attract passers by. The layout of the stand can also be very important to each genre of magazine as the shelf position can provide more advertising. The majority of magazines on this stand are fashion and TV. The music magazines are placed on the bottom of the shelf, this can make it difficult to see them and as they are surrounded by lots of other magazines this can make it see packed and messy. Each magazine has their own individual colour scheme which makes it appeal to their certain type of audience, for example a fashion magazine will have a simple but effective colour scheme. The layout for magazines is also very important as the front cover will be the first thing the audience sees therefore needing to stand out from the other magazines on display. Recently with the advancement of technology magazine sales have decreased and internet viewings have increased. This has affected sales and a lot of old style magazines have had to be discontinued. However this could be beneficial to collectors as it would increase there value. The costumes for each person presented on the front cover of a magazine is also an important aspect as they also need to be relevant to the specific type of magazine. Fashion magazines need to have the most recent and up to date clothing and football magazines need to have the winning teams football kit.

Audience research

Each genre of music magazines have a different type of audience, this depends on the type of music, style, layout, colours, artist they use etc.

POP

Pop is one of the most common and popular types of music, their main type of audience is young girls ranging from 13-17 however it does appeal to some young boys. When doing research I  discovered that out of 10 girls aged 16-17 8/10 girls said the prefer POP music to any other genre, the other two said that the varied between genres. When asking 10 boys aged 16-17 only 2 out of 10 boys asked said they liked POP.

Rock

Rock is seen as a genre with a mixed aged audience. There are many different sub genes of rock such as indie, and each sub genre has their own specific audience. What is stereotypically known as pure rock has an older generation as its audience because it was a specific genre when they was growing up in the 60's and the 70's however now their are more sub genres now giving it a broader audience.

Classical

The main audience for classical music is aged between 50-70 years old for both genders. Classical has a very specific type of audience and was known to be listened to be mainly upper class people during the victorian period.

Reggae

Reggae was pioneered through the 60's and 70's, their primary audience was poor working class Jamaicans, however this spread across the globe being listened to by all ages, race and gender. Reggae was used as a branch for many sub-genres such as hip-hop and ska. One of the most popular artist from reggae was Bob Marley. His music appealed to all types of people from young to old.

Country

39% of country music listeners are apart of the top demographics, Each week, more than 45,487,700 adults listen to Country radio stations nationwide. There is no specific age for a country music listener, country music has a wide audience with artist such as Taylor Swift.

R'n'B

Most of R'n'B's songs are based on love this therefore will appeal to an audience of 16 years old to 32 years old, this is because they would have been more likely to experience love and then would be able to relate to it. They have a mixed gender audience as this genre is not specific to one gender.

It cost £2.30 and can be seen as quite expensive for this audience demographic however it is made up by the fact that they give away free gifts such as nail polish and posters.
Jazz Times target audience is aimed at an older american audience, this is because jazz originated from African-American communities therefore having grown up with it and liking the magazine.
